1. Program provided in our county schools for gifted students. Most students range from grades 3-6. 2. Maintains contact with legislators at state and national level to promote legislation for improvement and expansion of services for gifted children. 3. Provides workshops on various topics concerning exceptional children. 4. Conducts academic bowls and leagues. 5. Organizes and conducts Allen County Spelling Bee. 6. Assists area schools with the identification of gifted students. 7. Coordinates a Women in Science day for the 7th and 8th grade girls every other year in conjunction witth the SESA program. 8. Offers a summer professional course for college credits for teachers as needed.

ALLEN COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT-Allen County Combined Health District 419-228-4457
The Health Department has several divisions that offer a variety of services. Vital Statistics records and issues birth and death records. The Maternal/Child Health programs provide Pregnancy testing and Medicaid application assistance for pregnant women. Health Department nurses coordinate Allen County's Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps (BCMH). Pregnancy testing is available on Wednesdays and Fridays 8-9am and through the Family Planning Program (419-228-6154). Nurses also oversee Communicable Disease Control which includes general communicable disease and sexually transmitted diseases (STD). An STD clinic is available on Tuesdays 4:00-5:00pm. Tuberculosis (T.B.) testing is available Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, & Friday, 8-9am and 3-4pm. Immunization Clinics for children are held every Wednesday, 1:30-3:30pm, Thursday 8:30-10:30am, with satellite locations at various times/locations around the county*. Nutritional counseling and supplemental foods are provided through the WIC Program (419-224-8200). Public health education is provided in the areas of AIDS, heart disease, nutrition, physical activity, and the health ministries program. HIV/AIDS testing is available by appointment. The Environmental Health Division regulates restaurants and swimming pools, provides sewage and plumbing inspections & issues well permits. The Environmental Division also provides follow-up for animal bites and public health complaints. Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening provided through Women's Preventive Healthcare Project, and community agencies. They also provide physician and community education. Diversion Department--provides diversion services and counseling for unruly and some delinquent youth (e.g., truants, runaways) and their parents designed to eliminate the need for formal court intervention. Located at 1800 Allentown Gd, Suite B Lima, Ohio 45805, phone 998-5249. Probation Department--official supervision of adjudicated unruly and delinquent offenders within the community, Detention Center--provides temporary secure care for children pending court adjudication or disposition, Treatment Center--provides treatment, individual, family, group, and mental health counseling, and educational services for children in a secure setting after a court adjudication of delinquency, Day Treatment Program provides treatment, counseling and educational services to children in a non-secure setting after court adjudication, Restitution Program-provides a work-based program to permit adjudicated youth an opportunity to pay their court-ordered victim restitution, Community Services Program-provides a work-based program to permit adjudicated youth an opportunity to give service to their community as a form of rehabilitation.

Blood related service-blood donor drives; Service to Military Families-sends reports/verifications to military for emergencey notification/leaves, Liaison between military personnel and families; Disaster Preparedness-maintains community-wide disaster plan, Teaches community disaster education, Trains and sends workers to national disaster sites, DAT responds to single family fires; Disaster Relief-emergency assistance (food, shelter, clothing) and other vital needs to disaster victims; First Aid Training-a variety of programs for children of all ages and adults that include babysitting, basic aid training, First Aid for Children today, scout badge fulfillment, various seminars on First Aid topics as well as four hour certified course; CPR-adult, infant, child one man rescuer training that covers rescue breathing, choking, cardiac emergencies and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Professional rescuer training that covers two man CPR, using a hard mask and bag valve mask is available; Health services-other Red Cross certifications: HIV/AIDS, Bloodborne Pathogens, 'Til Help Arrives, AED; Nursing-a wide range of topics and seminars offered including HIV/AIDS training, Home Care, BP screenings, talks and programs can be tailor made to suite a group's needs; Workplace-training for companies at their discretion. Courses are recognized by OSHA and can be taught on-site and broken into modules. Classes range from CPR and First Aid to Blood Borne Pathogens; Water Safety-swimming courses ages 6 months and up. Big Brothers Big Sisters: Matches children with mature, responsible, and responsive adults who have volunteered their time and friendship, screens applicants, maintains supervision of matches. Buddies: Matches children with mature, responsible, and caring high school students who have volunteered their time and friendship, gives high school students an opportunity to do community service with children, have weekly activities with children, which include crafts, swimming, and recreational activities, maintains supervision of activities, provides weekly recreation as well as arts and crafts.

The Child Health Clinic offers a variety of services to children who do not have a family doctor. Services include: Well Child Screening, age 0-21; Screenings for lead, sickle cell and low blood iron; Growth and Nutritional Assessment; Developmental Screening; Vision and Hearing Screening; Immunizations checked and updated; Health Education; Early discharge and 2 week check-ups for new babies; Referrals to Specialists when appropriate. Social services available include: Psychological Assessment, Screening, Referrals, and limited Counseling.

COMMUNITY CONNECTION FOR OHIO OFFENDERS, INC., DIVISION OF ALVIS HOUSE 419-225-8793
Community Services-Post Release Services: Community Connection offers support, assistance, consultations, transitional and educational programming and referrals for offenders, ex-offenders and their families. Services include: case management, employment assistance, information and referral services, and other assistance on an as needed basis. Insititutional Services-Aunt Mary's Storybook Project: Incarcerated parents tape record books for their children to strengthen family bonds and encourage literacy. Currently established in 12 Ohio prisons. Prison Literacy: Trained inmate tutors teach inmate students to increase their reading skills. Using the newspaper as a teaching tool, students gain basic life-skills and increase their employability. Restorative Justice:Community Connection addresses repairing the harm done to individuals by providing: a)victim awareness panels to offenders, b)the opportunity for victims of violent crimes to dialogue with their offenders, and c)ex-offender speakers to address inmates concerning personal accountability. We work to bridge the gap between victims and offenders in a constructive manner.
